GIS & GPS

The Lancaster Area Sewer Authority (LASA) Collection Department relies on Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to accurately locate and manage sewer infrastructure assets in the field. This technology plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of the sewer system and ensuring timely responses to Pennsylvania One Call (PA1 Call) requests. The GIS tools utilized within the department include advanced mobile mapping applications and high-precision GPS devices, which collectively enhance operational efficiency and asset management.

When new sewer infrastructure assets are dedicated to the LASA system, they are physically located in the field, and their precise geographic coordinates are recorded using GPS technology. These GPS coordinates, which are accurate to within one meter, are then used to refine the positional accuracy of assets within LASA’s GIS database. To date, LASA has successfully identified and cataloged approximately 98% of the total system assets using this technology. This ongoing effort ensures that the GIS database remains a reliable and up-to-date resource for field crews and system operators.

The Collection Department leverages mobile and web-based GIS mapping solutions to streamline daily operations, particularly in responding to customer service requests and PA1 Call notifications. PA1 Call requests are submitted by contractors prior to any subsurface excavation to ensure that underground utilities are properly marked and protected. This process is essential for preventing accidental damage to critical infrastructure and safeguarding both construction workers and the surrounding community. LASA plays a key role in this initiative by responding to an average of 650 PA1 Call requests per month, demonstrating its commitment to infrastructure protection, regulatory compliance, and public safety.

By integrating GIS technology into its workflow, LASA enhances the accuracy, efficiency, and reliability of its sewer asset management and field operations. These advancements contribute to the long-term sustainability of the sewer system and support LASA’s mission of delivering high-quality wastewater services to the community.
