West Earl Water Resource Recovery Facility

Click on the image above to download a plant overview and process flow diagram. See below for a narrative description of the treatment process.

Influent Pump Station / Headworks
The influent wastewater flows into a pump station with a vertical auger debris removal system. This system removes material such as rags, plastic, and wood. The water is then pumped to a mechanical fine screen that removes additional material. All materials removed from this stage in the process are landfilled.

Sequencing Batch Reactors
Two sequencing batch reactors (SBR) are used to treat the wastewater. In this system, equalization, aeration, and clarification are all performed in a single tank. The system includes the following sequence of timed steps: feed, react, settle, decant.

Equalization
After being decanted from the SBR’s, treated water flows through a series of equalization basins which slows down the flow prior to the final step in the treatment process.

Disinfection
Disinfection is achieved through an ultraviolet (UV) treatment system. After disinfection, the flow leaving the facility is measured by an ultrasonic flow meter and the treated water is discharged into the Conestoga River.

Solids Storage and Handling
Solids generated from the process are transported via tanker truck to LASA’s Blue Rock Water Resource Recovery Facility where it is treated Class A – Exceptional Quality standards that allow it to be recycled for agricultural utilization or other end-uses.
